Old Town North Farmer’s Market
The Old Town North Community Partnership operates a Farmers Market every Sunday from 9am to 1pm in Montgomery Park, 901 N. Royal Street and Thursdays from 3pm to 7pm in the warmer months. Lists of vendors and additional information are available on the Farmer’s Market Website
Canal Center Events
Canal Center, an office and restaurant complex, has a large plaza overlooking the Potomac River. For the public, it offers events such as Yoga on the Plaza, musical performances, art gallery shows, and festivals. The dates of individual upcoming events are listed on the Canal Center Events Website
Taste of Old Town North (September)
The Old Town North Community Partnership celebrates the variety of restaurants available in Old Town North at the Taste of Old Town North event, happening in Montgomery Park since 2008. The event includes free tastings from area restaurants, musical performances, sports demonstrations, and exhibit booths.
Stormwater Drain Covers
The Old Town North Alliance and The City of Alexandria Office of the Arts are working together to bring 23 artist-designed stormwater drain covers to Old Town North. Installation was completed in late 2023.
Chalk-A-Block (September)
The Old Town North Alliance is pleased to sponsor an interactive walk through the neighborhood to watch artists create artworks in 10x10 spaces on the street, enjoy live music, and shop the work of local artisans and makers. Though impermanent, these chalk works bring a sense of joy to visitors.
Torpedo Factory Plan
The Torpedo Factory Art Center is an important anchor to the Old Town North Arts and Culture Walk. The Old Town North Alliance recently participated in the City of Alexandria's Torpedo Factory Stakeholder Task Force to explore ideas to increase the vibrancy and economic sustainability of this important arts institution.
Alexandria Boat Parade (December)
Alexandria’s cherished Holiday Boat Parade has been extended to the North Waterfront. More than 50 boats cruise along one mile of Potomac River shoreline. Activities in Oronoco Bay Park focus on family-friendly games and food options, and musical performances, from 2 to 7 pm on the first Saturday in December.
Developer and Property Owner Contributions
Developers and property owners in Old Town North are installing art works on their sites. Muse at 1201 N. Royal Street, Venue at 901 N. Fairfax Street, and The Oronoco at 601 N. Fairfax Street have already installed several sculptural works on their sites. Additional works are planned at TideLock (1100 block of N. Fairfax Street) and the redevelopment of Montgomery Center.
The Old Town North Alliance is actively contacting major property owners and developers with projects in Old Town North to advocate for arts installations compatible with the vision of the Art and Culture Walk. A new mural has been incorporated into the approved plan for the redevelopment of the Ladrey apartment building by Winn Companies, and additional works of art are in the proposal stages.
