Outdoor Art in Old Town North
The neighborhood is already home to several major outdoor pieces of art, and more is on the way.
On the wall of the Harris Teeter store at 500 Madison Street in North Old Town is, “City Sweep,” made of stainless steel by Barnard Collin, and installed in 2015. It is a reflection and point of discovery for all things Alexandria.
The sculpture “Plinth” was created by the artist Tom Fruen to recall the historic Alexandria Canal that was on this site in the late 1800s.
“‘Promenade Classique’ at Canal Center is the first large-scale American commission for the renowned French sculptoral team of Anne and Patrick Poirier. Working with landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg, the Poiriers devised a succession of neoclassical sculptural elements, starting with a bronze lightning bolt, which, except in winter, launches the flow of water. From there, the water makes its way past gargantuan sculptural fragments, through a reflecting pool and into a heap of ‘ruins’ under a waterfall at the river's edge.”
